PP Assembly: St Valentine:priest, wedding planner and martyr

(0)
This is a Secondary school assembly that covers the following: **1. How do we celebrate St Valentine’s day? 2. Who Was St Valentine? 3. What is his message? ** (1) Music suggestions : Bowie or the more recent Isakov’s Valentine’s Day or endless Beetles scores about love. Could even go upmarket and impress the Classists with a Shostakovich waltz. Soundtrack from the recent film about Romeo and Juliet with the camera sweeping the Italian Renaissance villas (wrong period of Italian history but very romantic) might be just a little too indulgent. Tell me the music you used.Inspire. **(2) Video: You Tube: Top 10 romantic gestures (3) Bible reading (4) Final thought (5) Call to action ** Below is a basic outline of the Saint which you could use. The rest is done for you but can easily be slighly adapted. Enjoy and share your Valentine Day with me. He was a Roman Priest in Roman times when Claudius was emperor. He was persecuted the church at that time,He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died.

PP Assembly: New Year: New You

I searched the TES site today and found no assembly for the New Year so here goes! It is aimed at Secondary school children but could easily be adapted! WHAT ARE OUR GOALS? WILL WE ACHIEVE THEM? WILL WE BE A BETTER PERSON IN 2018/9 IF WE ACHIEVE THEM? It includes: Music: You could use ABBA- Happy New Year but that would depend on whether you’ve already see Mamma Mia 20 times! Video: The mini bios are on You Tube. The specific links are included incl Bill Gates bio. Bible reading Prayer- by Billy Graham Final thought Call to action Research for talk- below and current research on people’s top goals today -on slides **For the Intro here is some background on where the name of the month January comes from: **In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/; Latin: Ianus, pronounced [ˈjaː.nus]) is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. It is conventionally thought that the month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius),[ but according to ancient Roman farmers’ almanacs Juno was the tutelary deity of the month Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and in his association with Portunus, a similar harbor and gateway god, he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping ** ** Any way whatever you do, I hope 2018/9 is a good year for you! Any problems please email me. Some nice feedback if time permits!

This assembly would suit both Primary and Secondary students. A very versatile number here as you can see from the title. It includes the following: 2 Videos, 2 Bible readings, a Prayer, Final inspiring thought and a Call to action. **Music suggestions: * Seconds - Human League, or Death Was Arrested - NorthPoint Inside Out, or King of Rome-PetShop Boys, or Rhianna -We Found Love but many others would suit. (See You Tube) * TALKS Introduction To Assembly In 1950 C. S. Lewis wrote The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a fantasy novel for children. Most of the novel is set in Narnia, a land of talking animals and mythical creatures that is ruled by the evil White Witch. In the frame story, four English children are relocated to a large, old country house following a wartime evacuation. The youngest, Lucy, visits Narnia three times via the magic of a wardrobe in a spare room. Lucy’s three siblings are with her on her third visit to Narnia. In Narnia, the siblings seem fit to fulfill an old prophecy and find themselves adventuring to save Narnia and their own lives. The lion Aslan gives his life to save one of the children; he later rises from the dead……… Who Was C. S. Lewis and Why Did He Write This Book? Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963) was a British writer and lay theologian. He held academic positions in English literature at both Oxford University (Magdalen College, 1925–1954) and Cambridge University (Magdalene College, 1954–1963). He is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy According to Lewis’s memoir Surprised by Joy, he was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but fell away from his faith during adolescence. Lewis returned to Anglicanism at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an “ordinary layman of the Church of England”.[2] Lewis’s faith profoundly affected his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide praise. Lewis wrote more than 30 books[3] which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies. Lewis wrote the book for (and dedicated it to) his goddaughter, Lucy Barfield. She was the daughter of Owen Barfield, Lewis’s friend, teacher, adviser, and trustee.[4] In 2003, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was ranked ninth on the BBC’s The Big Read poll.[5] Time magazine included the novel in its list of the 100 Best Young-Adult Books of All Time.[6] Check out my blog: brighterwindows.blogspot.com for further inspiration.; e.g. A Lenten Journey in 2020, Should We Give Up Choc for Lent? PP Assembly: Rich or Poor : What Am I? (Oscars March 4th )

(0)
Useful assembly on the Rich and Poor; especially around the time of a big celebrity event such as the film Oscars: 4th March 2018, on which this assembly is based, which clearly showcases the exclusive lifestyle of the Rich and Famous. Very topical this year with Harvey Winestein and Kevin Spacey’s public shaming still being very much in the Media Intro asking assembly pupils to look at photos of Spacey or Weinstein and identify the industry that has made them rich. You could go on to talk about why they have been in the news with older students. Or indeed a short news clip of the 2018 Oscars- see You Tube. Tell pupils briefly what the Oscars are all about Introduce the 2015Oscar Goodie bag of $160, 000- see Telegraph article online: What’s in the $160,000 Oscars 2015 goody bag? - Telegraph . or the 2016 bag You choose or amalgamate. The assembly encourages pupils to see that all that glitters is indeed not gold by contrasting the items in the Oscar goody bag with items you really need to make you happy. Second week of March, then, here’s the zeitgeist assembly for you! Now lay the table and get the wine out! Please leave me a review or feedback telling me how you used this resource and why
